Abstract
The 2012 Innovation Awards is the platform for highlighting the best new innovations across the worldFor more information on the awards, visit http://conferences.theiet.org/innovation/This year National Grid sponsored the Power / Energy Award category. Arago Technology Ltd won the award this year with their Arago_Insulating Cross Arms For Transmission Towers. The judging panel commented:In collaboration with Manchester University and other companies, Arago Technology developed an insulating cross arm which can be retro-fitted to existing overhead line pylons. This innovation enables network operators to increase transmission capacity up to 150% when used with low sag conductors and therefore can avoid the requirement for new overhead line routes in certain applications.Insulating cross-arms have been developed before but structural limitations prevented their use in retro-fit applications to existing infrastructure. Arago overcomes this issue with its patented non-circular insulator profile that provides the structural buckling characteristics of an I-Beam, with the electrical and environmental properties of a conventional circular insulator.Watch the award ceremony nowhttp://scpro.streamuk.com/uk/player/Default.aspx?wid=15584&ptid=1068&t=0
