Abstract

The top five teams from the 2017-18 season league table attended the IET Faraday Challenge Day National Final on Wednesday 11 July at Thorpe Park to compete for the season’s winning title and £1000 for their school. This year’s challenge was in association with Thorpe Park Resort and tasked teams to design and develop a prototype that could make one of the rides safer, more attractive to ride or more efficient to use and include an electrical circuit.

One-hundred and sixty-seven events took place across the UK to host the 2017-18 IET Faraday Challenge Days. Up to six teams of year 8 school students competed at each event to find the best solution to the engineering-related challenge.

I began my career as an apprentice engineer with Caterpillar whilst studying at the University of Wolverhampton to gain my degree in manufacturing engineering. Upon completion of my apprenticeship, I secured the role of Production Engineer responsible for the manufacture of Caterpillars power plant transmissions. In 2009 I moved into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) education and began a role with the Royal Academy of Engineering and Young Engineers on a pilot project called the London Engineering Project aimed at inspiring young people in hard to reach schools in London.Upon completion of the pilot project, I then moved onto Engineering in Motion as International Project Manager responsible for F1 in Schools - Formula 1 STEM Challenge, Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge and the Jaguar Primary School Challenge. From there I became Director of Programmes for STEMNET responsible for the National STEM Ambassador programme, STEM Clubs, special projects and the London Schools STEM Advisory Network, before joining the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) as Head of Education 5-19.My team provide a wide range of opportunities and initiatives including competitions, careers information, grant funding and FREE curriculum-linked STEM resources aimed to support the delivery of STEM both within and outside the classroom with the aim to inform and inspire the next generation of engineers.

Her current role involves designing buildings’ electrical services. Ozak Esu, graduate engineer Currently based in Birmingham, 24-year-old Ozak Esu moved to the UK in 2008 to study an IET accredited BEng in electronic and electrical engineering at Loughborough University.Graduating in 2011 with first class honours, she was awarded a research studentship to undertake a PhD, again at Loughborough.“My research investigated the instrumentation of low-cost electronics for vibration-based condition monitoring of wind turbine blades. The motivation for my research was to contribute towards reducing operations and maintenance costs associated with wind turbines,” she explains.
