Abstract

Brought together by our love of reading, this virtual club looks at STEM-related books written by contemporary authors. With each episode we will be looking at a different book and chatting with the author to go beyond of the book. This will include questions and answers for you in the audience to find out about what you want to know. Brian David Johnson is a friend of the IET and has presented at our events and supported our 150th anniversary celebrations. A professor of practice at Arizona State University’s School for the Future of Innovation in Society, he has more than 40 patents and appears regularly on Bloomberg TV, PBS, Fox News and the Discovery Channel. See how you can future proof your career and business with an actionable 10–15-year vision. Brian has worked with governments, trade organisations, start-ups and multinational corporations to not only help envision their future but specify the steps needed to get there.

What is a futurist? As you might imagine, I get this question a lot. Often people think it sounds complex or scary, but the answer just might surprise you.As a futurist I work with organizations that need to make big bets today that might not pay off for 10 to 15 years. The future is not fixed. It is built every day by the actions of people. I believe that we all must be active participants in our future, not only having a vision for tomorrow but also asking what potential future we want to avoid. I collaborate with corporations, universities, trade associations and start-ups to model these futures and then work with them to identify the specific steps they need to take today, tomorrow and five years from now to realize the future they envision. This is a process I call ‘Futurecasting,’ and it’s a mix of social science, technical research, economic and trends data, history, expert interviews and storytelling.Over the past two decades, my work has fallen into three distinct areas:Corporate: I work with businesses and organizations to chart out possible futures and what they need to do to get there.Media: I am an author of both science fiction and science fact, and am a regular contributor to IEEE Computer Magazine and Successful Farming Magazine, among others. I speak frequently about the subject of the future, both on stage and in the media.Philanthropy/Education: I have always had a passion for education, both receiving and giving back. I believe we must work with the next generation. These minds are the ones that will build the future. It’s our job to help them and then get out of the way.Thank you for visiting my profile, and please feel free to connect if you feel I can be of service to you or your organization.
