About the session

Dr Faizan Ahmad, Teesside University. UK

The Tees Valley region is a leader in hydrogen production and storage, responsible for producing 50% of the UK's hydrogen. As part of the broader effort to achieve net-zero emissions, this area leverages its strong industrial heritage and existing infrastructure. Due to these reasons, the region is experiencing significant investment in hydrogen-related initiatives, with many ground-breaking projects set for the next ten years. The strategic document "A Vision for Hydrogen on Teesside" highlights how Tees Valley can become a major global player in low-carbon hydrogen production, consumption, and export. This vision also aligns with the advancement of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies, and aims to safeguard and create thousands of high-quality jobs.

This presentation focuses on several projects which are being carried at “Net Zero Industry Innovation Centre” and “Centre of Sustainable Engineering at Teesside University in the field of hydrogen and CCUS. Some of the examples include “Research England Hydrogen Innovation Project (REHIP), Tees Valley Hydrogen Innovation Project (TVHIP) in addition to Innovate UK funded projects in “Carbon Capture within Energy from Waste Plants” and “Innovative Direct Air Capture”.

These initiatives are set to transform Tees Valley into a leader in clean energy and carbon management, contributing to both regional economic growth and national climate goals.
