About the session
Presentation Summary
The rapid expansion of HVDC has been key to the realization of Interconnection and larger scale offshore wind in Europe. The recent ENTSO-E offshore network development plan indicates that the number of HVDC converter stations and the installed length of cables will only increase in the coming decades. These HVDC projects will be critical to the energy transition towards net zero and for security of supply.
The complexity of primary and ancillary equipment in a HVDC converter results in a decrease in resilience compared to the equivalent AC substation. This is seen with greater forced outages rates and often more complex fault finding and return to service. Therefore it is vital that owners and operators of HVDC are proactive in planning for the asset management during the operational phase from the early concept stage.
This presentation will highlight some the impacts of failures with existing schemes throughout the lifecycle. It will then review various operational models and suggest key considerations for asset management during development, construction, early years operation and later refurbishment of existing stations.
