About the session
Science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are vital for a modern knowledge economy. Examples of the complex journey from knowledge creation to impact in the economy/society illustrate that the UK's strengths in research, outstanding universities and positive climate for innovation along with their industrial strategy position the nation well for growth. More important than ever, then, is the supply of able, well-trained, highly motivated young people engaged with STEM subjects - but what of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics)? It is important too that we recognise the role of the arts, with particular emphasis and illustration given in this lecture to user considerations and aesthetics for product/market success.
