About the session

In 2010, BAE Systems conducted a review of the management of product safety across all its sectors. The review examined many issues associated with the safety of the company's products and consulted widely with its businesses around the world. The outcome of the review was a set of four principles: (1) accountability, (2) level of safety, (3) conforming products, and (4) learning and sharing information. The principles were tested by examining how six other sectors (automotive, civil aviation, construction, health, offshore, and rail) address their equivalent challenge. The speaker explains the four principles and provides details of the associated research and findings.

    Bill Walby

BAE Systems, Head Office Corporate Responsibility Team, Head of Sustainability

Bill joined BAE Systems in 2004 following the acquisition of Alvis Vickers. He most recently worked for BAE Systems Global Combat Systems (GCS) as Head of Product Safety and Engineering Governance, before joining the Head Office Corporate Responsibility Team in 2012. As Head of Sustainability, he is responsible for the strategic development of sustainability through the provision of guidance, standardising/co-ordinating our approach internally and externally, developing relationships in external arenas, providing support to working groups, learning and sharing, and generally improving the Company’s public performance and standing in the area of sustainability.Prior to his latest appointment Bill worked in various BAE Systems roles across the Product Safety and Engineering Governance arena. Having built and developed the GCS Product Safety team from its roots, delivered against a number of land vehicle products/projects, he moved on to support Product Safety across BAE Systems via a number of working groups before moving to the centre and taking on a strategic role in the development of the arena. He has spent the last three years working on a corporate programme resulting in the evolution of their Product Safety Principles and is now working in sharing these across the UK Defence sector and the wider global safety arena.Outside of work, Bill is a season ticket holder at a Premiership Rugby Club (320 miles from his home!), and in his sporting prime he was a serious tennis player representing Durham and Cleveland at County level.
