Abstract
Barry Brooks, the new President of the IET, will use his Inaugural Lecture at the world-renowned Royal Institution building to remind us of some of the many engineers who have been the leaders and innovators who have made a difference to the world. Drawing on the shared heritage of the IET and the Royal Institution, starting with Michael Faraday, he will look at how engineers, scientists and technologists have applied engineering principles to solve problems and make life better for people, economies and the environment. Barry will illustrate how today's engineers, technologists, and technicians will continue to make major impact on our society by applying their unique skills and enthusiasm, and how leadership and volunteering via the Professional Engineering Institutions can extend the effectiveness of individual efforts. In return, volunteers can develop their own skills, enjoy the benefits of meeting and helping others, and gain satisfaction from making a significant difference to the world around us.
