About the session
Innovation and engineering solutions to improve everyday patient safety allows for a culmination of marginal gains allowing for considerable outcome improvements. This requires an understanding and a regular working presence in the relevant clinical setting, an environment to encourage and facilitate innovation, a supportive culture that allows risk management rather than just risk aversion, an understanding of intellectual property and development pathways, and most importantly an implementation friendly culture at all levels of healthcare. The average time for implementation in healthcare is often quoted at 17 years – the NHS has responded with the Health Innovation Agencies, the Academic Health Science Networks, the Clinical Entrepreneur programme, the Accelerated Access Review, the NHS Innovation Accelerator programme and Innovation and Technology Tariffs to help address and influence cultural change and provide our patients with new technologies and ways of working in a more timely way.
