Abstract

To mark National Dyslexia Week, The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) held a webinar exploring how dyslexia and creativity are helping to engineer a better world.

National Dyslexia Week takes place in October each year and the theme for this year is ‘create’. Creativity has a huge role to play in engineering and the IET is holding a free and inspiring webinar, Engineered by Dyslexia, that will explore the links between dyslexia and engineering. Those with dyslexia have an exceptional ability in complex problem solving, critical thinking, creativity and people management – all skills that are highly regarded in engineering.

Dyslexia Week is an annual event run by the British Dyslexia Association to raise awareness and understanding of dyslexia. This year, it took place during 5-11 October and focused on creativity. To help raise awareness and support the week, the IET’s webinar features real-life engineers with dyslexia sharing their stories and experiences and talking about how dyslexia helps them in their job.

The webinar was chaired by Diversity and Inclusion Manager, Jo Foster, and featured four engineers who are engineering a better world for us all.

Jo Foster commented: ‘’We are delighted to host and support Engineers with Dyslexia to promote the very many and often overlooked benefits that neurodiversity can bring to the STEM profession, as well as highlight some of the barriers that individuals with dyslexia may face.’’
