About the session
We currently have an enormous challenge in our hands as we decarbonise our economy whilst trying to maintain growth and competitiveness. The mobility sector contributes more than 20% of global carbon emissions. In response, societies are ever more supportive of a transition to electrified solutions with governments now backing it up with policy. Such is the case for the UK and most European countries that have implemented a ban on all new road fossil fuel powered passenger vehicles from 2030 or 2035.
At Ricardo we are at the forefront of electrified mobility. Our continuous innovations in integrated electric drive units, thermal management systems, and more recently wide bandgap semiconductor traction inverters, converters, and on-board chargers gives us and our customers a competitive edge in the electrified sector. Powertrains featuring and overall efficiency greater than 96% are now commonplace and the search for additional improvements does not relent. Challenges still remain: further increases in efficiency, reductions in vehicle mass, and making electric vehicles affordable. In the coming years we will certainly witness increasing activity in research and development in the electrification sector.
