Abstract
It’s national inclusive week, a campaign designed to celebrate and promote inclusion in practices and workplaces. So, how inclusive and diverse are engineering workplaces? The need for diversity within engineering professions has been clear for decades. In 2017, 8.1% of men and women in engineering were from ethnic minority groups. In, 2019, 90% of the engineering workforce was male. Will greater diversity and inclusion make a difference? Employing more women and people from ethnic minority backgrounds could solve the engineering skills gap, increase revenue, and foster greater creativity. However, the interests of girls and ethnic minority groups are often lost in early stages of their education. Could better representation inspire young people to see themselves as engineers and technology specialists? Individuals, businesses and educationist all gain by working to fix this. Tackling diversity issues must be a priority for engineering communities.
