About the session

Tutorial - M.A.1.T Recent Advances in Distributed Sensing Using Optical Fibres

Paul Westbrook OFS Labs Abstract In recent years, distributed sensing has benefited from the use of optical fibres with engineered scattering enhancements along their lengths. In this tutorial we describe the properties of such fibres and their application in the sensing schemes that use coherent reflectometry. We review these sensing schemes and show how such fibres can greatly increase signal to noise in applications such as distributed acoustic sensing and fibre shape sensing. Finally, we describe design rules and use cases for enhanced scattering fibres in telecom systems and other applications that require monitoring of linear assets ranging in length from 1m to 100km. Speaker Biography Paul Westbrook holds degrees in physics from University of Michigan and MIT. He is currently a technical manager at OFS Labs in Somerset, NJ and has more than 20 years of research experience in fiber device applications. He has developed new fiber related products for distributed acoustic sensing, medical shape sensing, fiber lasers, fiber gratings, and polarization measurement.
