High capacity coherent transceivers have recently achieved a level of performance that is approaching mathematical bounds. The enabling techniques are buried deep inside the digital signal processing engine. Subcarrier modulation techniques, probabilistic constellation shaping, signal conditioning, channel impairment compensation, self-learned adaptive schemes are examples of many techniques used. In this tutorial, we will review different aspects of the DSP used in state-of-art coherent transceivers.
