Radio spectrum is the 'lifeblood' of wireless communication. Conventional licensed spectrum allocation strategy by radio regulatory bodies can be overly restrictive, making a large part of radio spectrum underutilized. Cognitive radio, a new paradigm of wireless communication, has been considered as a potential way to solve the conflict between the scarcity of spectrum and the inefficient usage of this physical resource.
