Abstract

This work develops a conceptual framework for cost estimating using Artificial Intelligence. Machine learning methods and generative AI methods are brought together around the cost estimating process tasks in order to improve productivity and provide alternative data analysis methods. In particular prompt engineering is explored as a way of developing initial cost estimating structure and subsequently a range of machine learning methods are compared in their accuracy and explainability. The work brings together recent projects taking place at the University of Manchester and hence synthesise cases and applications into one methodology.

    Dr Paul Baguley

    University of Manchester, Lecturer

Dr Paul Baguley is a lecturer in project cost management at the University of Manchester and on the Masters courses in Management of Projects. Paul has worked for 26 years in applied research in cost engineering including over twenty-six companies and has been working with advanced cost modelling methods since 1999. Paul started his work in Artificial Intelligence (AI) as far back as 1999 with work in fuzzy logic and manufacturing process time modelling in aerospace and has since used advanced machine learning methods and now recently generative AI.
