The Birmingham Box Managed Motorways Phases 1 & 2 (BB MM 1&2) project is deploying managed motorways (MM) technology and operational regimes on to the M40, M42 and M6 in England. Phase 1 was completed in November 2009 and Phase 2 is currently being constructed. The Project Team achieved successful delivery of Phase 1 within the constraints of an accelerated programme, going from the commencement of detailed design, tender through construction and into operation in approximately two years. This presentation examines some of the techniques used to plan, manage and deliver the rapid deployment of a complex, operationally led technology scheme, focusing on Phase 1 of the project.
