This presentation describes a modular magnetically-coupled quadratic boost converter for microsource applications. The proposed converter is capable of accepting both DC as well as high-frequency AC supplies (generated by the microsources), unlike to the conventional implementation. If the microsource is of the high-frequency AC type, the controller enables the rectifier, otherwise (for a DC microsource) the rectifier stage is bypassed. The proposed converter gives high step-up gain (17 to 18 times) to increase the output voltage of the microsource up to 350 V from the input voltage range of 14 V to 20 V. In the proposed converter topology, the right half plane (RHP) zero gets completely eliminated for the boost operation and thus the converter makes a minimum phase system, enabling a simple and linear control. Verification is done on a 150-W prototype by giving 40-V (peak-to-peak) AC and 20-V DC supply.
