About the session

What makes 'good' 3D?  There are many dimensions to 'good' -  both technological and content. The speaker outlines some of the physics of 3D and how its potential Achilles heel, eyestrain, can be caused. To help us make 3D TV successful, we need to understand why it has been subject to cycles of success and comparative obscurity over the past decades. The programmes themselves will be critical - no-one is going to buy a 3D TV set just to use the glasses. Finally, 'good' 3D for television will be the 3D TV that is successful, and for that to happen the world will need to agree common technical standards. The status and prospects in the ITU for broadcast 3D TV standards are explained.
