A Transport Health-Check: Long Term Strategies For A Sustainable Future

Dr Ladyman will consider the social and environmental impacts of transport, particularly in the light of increasing demand for vehicles and road space which raise concerns over congestion, safety and the environment. He will also consider the long term strategies that are in place to ensure the future sustainability of the transport network.

Dr Stephen Ladyman was appointed Minister of State for Transport on 9 May 2005. His portfolio includes Europe, road policy, road safety, logistics, ports and shipping. Dr Ladyman is the MP for South Thanet in Kent. He was elected to Parliament in 1997. Before joining the Department for Transport he was Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Health and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram MP. In addition he has been a member of European Standing Committee B, European Standing Committee C, the Environment, Transport and the Regions Select Committee and Chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Autism. Dr Stephen Ladyman was born in 1952 in Lancashire and educated at Liverpool Polytechnic. He went on to gain his PhD at Strathclyde University and then worked as a Research Scientist for the Medical Research Council an as Head of Computing for the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology (1985 - 1990). Before his election to Parliament Dr Ladyman was Head of Computer User Support at Pfizer. He was also a local councillor for Thanet District Council between 1995 and 1999. His interests include football, renovating his house and golf whenever he gets time. He is married with one daughter, one step-daughter and two step-sons.
