About the speaker

Dr. Alan Smith was awarded his Ph.D in lighting from the University of Sheffield (UK) in 1996.

He holds the title of Visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of Manchester where he lectures in lighting to students taking degree courses in Optometry. He also holds the title of Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham where he lectures in lighting to Occupational Hygiene students. He represents The UK College of Optometrists on CIE-UK.

Using the Ice Cloud Chamber facilities available at the University of Manchester, he is currently investigating the performance of light sources used for Airfield Ground Lighting (Tungsten Halogen and LED) when operating in reduced visibility due to fog.

He is Chair of CIE Technical Committee (TC 5.26) ‘Guide for the Lighting of Sports Events for Colour TV and Film Systems’.

He has written textbooks singularly, including ‘Lighting for Health & Safety’, and contributed to many others with lighting references including: the ‘Encyclopaedia of Occupational Health & Safety’ published by The International Labour Office; ‘Encyclopaedia of Life Support Systems’ published by UNESCO and the Electrical Engineer’s Reference Book.
