Martyn is the President of the BCC (British Chambers of Commerce) and was until June 2011 president of the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC), trade and industry. This is one of the largest UK chambers with circa 4,000 member companies and 150 full time staff. He remains a board and policy council member at NECC.
Martyn has a number of other directorships of companies including Pearson-Harper Ltd who work in engineering content management and IT for the global oil and gas sector. He is a Director of Seaham business support company Business and Enterprise Group. Martyn was until 2010 the Group Development Director of PD Ports based in Middlesborough. This Group has interests in the operation of over 20 UK port and logistics businesses.
He previously held several senior positions within the Unipart Group of Companies based in Oxford including Director and General Manager of Unipart Rail Logistics, Customer Services Director at Railpart (UK) Ltd. (the leading supplier of traction and rolling stock spare parts to the rail industry) and Development Director at NRS Ltd (the major supplier of spare parts and supply chain services to the UK rail infrastructure market).
Martyn has considerable experience of the logistics world having previously worked for Exel plc (now DHL) in a variety of directorship roles and in fact it was Martyn who was responsible for the original successful creation of the now well-known and respected logistics brand Exel.
Martyn in the past had worked in a very wide range of industries and businesses having previously been with Ladbroke and Hilton Hotels as sales and marketing plus also development director.
He worked for German chemicals giant Hoechst in both the UK and Germany. In his early career he worked for major construction company George Wimpey and also for Morgan Crucible in the engineering sector.
Martyn is a regular speaker and writer on a wide variety of subjects on the UK general business scene and specifically regarding infrastructure, logistics and marketing areas. His published works include the publication of a report on "Pan-European Logistics – Strategies for Success in Supply Chain Management" for the Financial Times
