Where Tiberius got it wrong

New science is the basis of innovation and innovation is the basis of wealth creation. It is surprising, then, that innovation has so frequently been discouraged by authorities. Even in the modern era, policy instruments to connect science to wealth creation have often proved ineffective or even counter-productive.

Sir John is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Aeronautical Society, the Institute of Physics, and the IEE. He is a frequent speaker on change management, technology and defence science issues. He has been President of the Electrical Engineering Association and was a founder member of the UK Government's Technology Foresight programme. He was knighted in 1999.
