Proposals for Ultrawideband (UWB) regulations in the EU and Japan identify Detect and Avoid (DAA) as a feasible interference mitigation technique for co-existance with licensed services operating in frequences below 5GHz. This paper discusses the regulatory background to this requirement, the difficulty in setting parameters, and complexity of the practical implementation of such techniques while maintaining commercial viability for UWB radios.
