About the presentation
The landscape for innovation in Brazil is changing fast. R&D budgets are rising. Brazilian researchers are at the forefront of developments from biofuels to human genomics and ITC. But what are the real prospects for STI in Brazil? And how can the UK and Europe scale up collaboration with this emerging scientific player? In these presentations, Demos will publish the results of six months of extensive fieldwork and interviews with leading Brazilian innovators, scientists and policymakers, undertaken in partnership with the Brasilia-based think tank CGEE. The launch will include a panel discussion with UK and Brazilian thinkers and policymakers. James Wilsdon, Head of Science & Innovation, Demos, introduces this Panel Discussion. Contributing to the panel are: o Fernando Rizzo, Director, The Centre for Strategic Studies and Management, Brazil (CGEE) o Charles Leadbeater, Author of 'We-Think' and Demos Associate o Professor Luiz Augusto Horta Nogueira, University of Itajub?, Minas Gerais The Panel Discussion is followed by a Q&A session
About the speaker
Fernando Rizzo is Director of The Centre for Strategic Studies and Management (CGEE) and a professor of Materials Science and Metallurgy at the Catholic University (PUC) of Rio de Janeiro. Since completing his Masters degree, Fernando's international career has included a PhD at the University of Florida, a visiting scholarship at UCLA and a visiting professorship in 2004 at the Institute of Materials Research, University of Leeds. Charles Leadbeater is a leading authority on innovation and creativity. He is a longstanding Demos Associate, a Senior Visiting Fellow at NESTA, a visiting fellow at the Said Business School, Oxford University, and a co-founder of Participle, the public service innovation agency. A former Industrial Editor of the Financial Times, he has advised governments and organisations around the world on innovation strategy. Luiz Augusto Horta Nogueira, Mechanical Engineer (UNESP, 1987), MSc and PhD in Mechanical Engineering (Energy Dept/UNICAMP, Brazil, 1981 and 1987), currently Prof. Horta is Full Professor of Applied Energy at Natural Resources Institute of Federal University of Itajub? and consultant of United Nations agencies (FAO, UNDP and ECLAC) in bioenergy issues. Formerly Prof. Horta was Chair of Bioenergy at Memorial of Latin America in 2007, Technical Director of National Oil Agency from 1998 to 2004 and Visiting Scientist in the Wood Energy Program (FAO, Roma) from 1997 to 1998.
